Kozol Lab

The Kozol Lab studies how evolution shapes the brain and behaviors. We utilize a unique genetic model, Astyanax mexicanus or the blind Mexican cavefish, which exists as a single species with over 30 distinct populations. Surface morph populations live in the rivers of Mexico and develop eyes and pigmentation. In contrast, cave adapted populations have convergent cave adapted characteristics, including eye and pigment loss, along with novel behaviors, such as sensorimotor innovations.
